Each station connects a buried coupon of known surface area—simulating a coating holiday—to the pipeline through the test station, allowing direct measurement of the AC and DC current densities the structure is experiencing.
AC corrosion criteria are based on limiting current density on a time-weighted basis, so coupon test stations should be equipped with remote monitoring for data polling at regular intervals and time-weighted averaging of current density data.
