Cathodic Protection for Large Surface Condenser Heat Exchangers
What is the Problem?
Large surface condenser heat exchangers used in power generation and industrial facilities typically incorporate carbon steel water boxes that are continuously exposed to cooling water. In many power plants, condenser cooling water is part of a recirculating system where water is reused through cooling towers. As water evaporates, dissolved salts and contaminants become concentrated, increasing water conductivity and often creating a more corrosive environment for carbon steel water boxes. Combined with dissolved oxygen, temperature fluctuations, and coating degradation, these conditions can accelerate corrosion, leading to metal loss, leaks, increased maintenance costs, reduced equipment reliability, and potential unplanned outages.
How Cathodic Protection is Applied
Cathodic Protection (CP) is a proven corrosion control technology that reduces the corrosion rate of carbon steel by shifting the electrochemical potential of the metal surface to a protected state.
For large surface condensers, impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems are commonly utilized due to their ability to provide uniform protection across large submerged surfaces.
MATCOR’s impressed current probe anode systems are specifically designed for condenser and heat exchanger applications. The systems utilize mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes installed in proprietary probe assemblies that can be mounted through the water box wall with minimal impact to existing equipment and without major structural modifications.
A DC power supply, or rectifier, delivers controlled current to the anodes, which distribute protective current throughout the water box. Reference electrodes continuously monitor the protection level and provide feedback to maintain the desired structure-to-electrolyte potential. This ensures effective corrosion protection while minimizing power consumption and avoiding overprotection. Probe anode systems also provide a practical solution for both new construction and retrofit installations because they can be installed, inspected, and replaced with minimal disruption to plant operations.
