Feasibility Studies

MATCOR's cathodic protection feasibility studies determine whether structures like pipelines, deep wells, or above-ground storage tanks require corrosion protection, combining on-site testing with a review of engineering drawings and corrosion history. Backed by over 5 decades of experience, we deliver a full report covering feasibility, approximate budgetary costs, and recommended CP system types.
Cathodic Protection Feasibility Study

How do you determine if cathodic protection is needed?

Cathodic protection (CP) feasibility studies are performed to determine if there is a requirement for cathodic protection of structural assets such as gas pipelines, deep wells or above ground storage tanks (ASTs). Feasibility studies include:

  • On-site corrosion testing
  • Review of engineering drawings for the structure to be protected
  • Review of the structure’s corrosion history

Once on-site corrosion testing and analysis is complete, and engineering drawings and corrosion history have been reviewed, the best method of cathodic protection for the application must be determined.

MATCOR has over 50 years of experience in cathodic protection and assessing the need for corrosion prevention. Our corrosion experts will come to your facility to:

  • Gather and analyze data for the structure and surrounding environment
  • Provide expert review of your engineering drawings and corrosion history

Next, we will provide a full report that includes:

  • The feasibility of using cathodic protection
  • Approximate budgetary costs
  • A complete review of the types of cathodic protection systems recommended for your application

MATCOR copper sulfate (CuSO4) reference electrodes are permanent CP monitoring cells for underground, water tank, and freshwater applications. Available in underground-packaged, under-tank, and freshwater configurations, oversized for longer life and tested to ±10 mV.
MATCOR’s core drilled anode system installs replacement anodes and reference cells in existing storage tanks without requiring a full tank bottom replacement.
MATCOR cathodic protection cables are corrosion-resistant power cables available in multiple sizes and jacket compositions for CP system installations. HMWPE suits most environments; dual-extruded KYNAR/HMWPE and HALAR/HMWPE cables are recommended for high-chlorine-generation environments.
MATCOR custom anode sleds are designed and built to meet virtually any marine cathodic protection current output and size requirement. Standard Sea-Bottom Anode Sled designs are also available alongside fully custom configurations.
